A “Key to the City” award is a medieval tradition intended to confer trust and honor upon an outstanding citizen or friend of the community. At that time, those with “Keys” could enter the city at any time.
In the modern era, the Key to the City is a beloved symbol of civic recognition and gratitude reserved for individuals whose service to the public and the common good rises to the highest level of achievement. As Long Beach Mayor, Robert Garcia’s final civic ceremony of his tenure, two of our city’s most productive citizens, Rich Archbold of the Press Telegram and our own Chapter President, Naomi Rainey-Pierson, were honored with the keys to Long Beach!
The ceremony took place in the Long Beach City Hall, and chambers was packed full of many friends and family members of the award recipients who came to witness the event. The LB Chapter of the NAACP would like to extend congratulations to both Naomi and Rich, and enormous gratitude for your generosity of time and effort supporting the City of Long Beach and its surrounding communities.
